Borrowing Policy

Section 3: Operations

Sub-section : Borrowing privileges

The Macedon Public Library Board of Trustees has endorsed the American Library Association's Library Bill of Rights and the Right to Read concept. Therefore, all materials in the Macedon Public Library are available to any patron who has valid identification. The decision as to "appropriate" material(s) for juveniles is to be made by the parents, not the library staff.

Library cards shall be issued to any adult showing valid ID. Young people (able to sign their own first and last name through 16 years-of-age) must have their library card application signed by a parent or guardian who has valid ID.

The Macedon Public Library will accept ONLY Pioneer Library cards. Library cards from outside the Pioneer Library System can be used as ID to obtain a Macedon Library Card.

Minors are not restricted in the use of materials. Responsibility for the reading habits of minors rests with parents and legal guardians. Selection of materials is not restricted by the possibility that a minor might obtain materials their parents consider inappropriate. The library does not discriminate on the basis of age in the use of its resources.

The normal loan period for library materials shall be two weeks. Material(s) may be renewed twice if there are no requests waiting for the item(s). Material(s) may be renewed by phone.

Internet Policy

Section 3: Operations

Sub-section : Internet/Public access to computers

The Macedon Public Library provides access to the Internet to expand the information resources available to our community. The library does not monitor the Internet or have control over the information accessed through the Internet. While patrons are free to access whatever Internet sites they wish, the library must be mindful and respectful of the rights of other patrons (particularly children) not to be inadvertently exposed to materials and images they (or their parents or guardians) may find personally unsuitable. Therefore, staff members will request that a patron remove such an image or text from a computer screen if, in the staff member's judgment, the image or text is displayed in such a way that other patrons, particularly children, cannot avoid viewing it in the course of carrying out their business in the library.

Patrons should be aware that not all sites on the global Internet provide accurate, true, complete or current information. Further, some sites may carry information that a patron could find false, controversial or inappropriate.

Anyone with a valid Macedon Public Library card that is clear of fines and overdue items may use the Internet computers. Each user must leave his or her library card with the clerk at the desk while using the Internet computer. Anyone under 18 must have a parent or guardian provide written consent to use the Internet. Anyone under the age of 9 must have an adult sit with him/her at the computer at all times.

Conduct Policy

Section 3: Operations

Subsection : Disruptive Behavior

It is the policy of the Macedon Public Library to provide a safe, comfortable environment that is conducive to the use of library materials either by individuals or small groups. The library is designed for the use of all members of the public. Patrons are expected to observe the rights of other patrons and staff members and to use the library for its intended purposes.

The following kinds of behavior will not be allowed in the library:

In most cases, patrons who are behaving inappropriately in the library will be given one warning by the designated supervisor and asked to behave in an appropriate manner. Patrons who refuse to behave more appropriately after one warning will be asked to leave the library.

In cases in which a patron poses a clear danger to herself/himself or others, deliberately violates the law, or refuses to leave the library after being asked to leave by the designated supervisor, the police will be called to handle the situation.

Minors who are being disruptive will be asked to leave after one warning. If they are accompanied by an adult who cannot or will not control them, the adult will be asked to remove the minor from the building.
