  New books - up-coming releases

Some thoughts from Library Director Darlene Virkler . . .

I have waiting for me in a box at my home, an arctic blue laptop (decorated with a sprinkling of white flowers guaranteed to keep husband’s hands off).  It’s brand spanking new, state of the art, with Windows Vista installed.  It attaches to this great new photo printer, and a wireless router will allow me to use it anywhere in the house. I will be able to burn CDs and download to an MP3 player.  I will be in the vanguard of the latest technology.  I’m terrified of it.

I confess, I’m an early generation baby boomer and computer technology does not come naturally to me.  In fact, my younger sister is the one who is going to set-up the laptop up for me.  She knows what she’s doing and is not even the slightest bit wary of messing with this bit of new technology.  So why have I done this to myself?  Because my new laptop will take up a lot less room than my old Windows ’98 computer, and I can use it for fun stuff like downloading OverDrive software from the Pioneer Library System web site. (See Owwl2go)  With OverDrive installed on my computer, I can download audiobooks from PLS and either burn them to a CD or listen to them on an MP3 player.  I can also download eBooks from PLS for viewing on my new laptop. And music!  I love Eric Clapton’s song “Layla” - so why buy the pricy album when I can download the song for 99 cents?  And then listen to it whenever I want.  How cool is that!

Actually, the plan for this technology-challenged library director is to explore all the features and potential of my new computer so I can try to keep up with some of the technology our young library patrons use everyday without any problem.  If I run into any difficulty, I can always ask my sister for help, or consult any 8-year-old in the Children’s section of the library.

If you cannot find these books in the OWWL catalog to place a hold, it may be because it’s still too early.  Instead, call us at (315) 986-5932 and we can do it the old-fashioned way, by writing your name and phone number on a card.
