Graphic Novels: Manga and More
Kimberly Hanford, a former volunteer at the Macedon Public Library who is working toward her master’s degree in Library Science at the University of Buffalo, has been implementing her proposal for a Graphic Novel Center at the library. Her plan focused on the purchase and promotion of literature in the graphic format, which combines text and images to tell a story. Unlike their literary second-cousin, the comic book, graphic novels deal with a much broader range of literature, such as Shakespeare’s “Romeo and Juliet”. “Manga” refers to the Japanese art-form of the graphic novel, which has definitely led the parade in this developing genre.
Kim proposed purchasing volumes in both fiction and non-fiction categories in the fields of biography, history, science, art, fantasy, science fiction, drama, and the classics. The graphic format is gaining tremendously in popularity, especially among younger readers. This genre is also gaining favor with our adult patrons, and an increased number of graphic novels will enhance the developing Literacy Volunteers project coming to the library in 2008. With the assistance of the library staff, Kim has consolidated all of the graphic novels in the library's existing collection and housed them in a Graphic Novel Center in the Young Adult section, next to the shelves which will contain the Literacy Volunteers Training resource materials. The Center will be enhanced with graphics to make an enticing display for readers. Stop by and take a look!
