 “Double Your Dollars” - 2008 Campaign Kick-Off

(Please see 2007 Honor Roll of "Double Your Dollars" donors)

The Friends of the Macedon Public Library have once again been awarded a   matching grant by the Bullis Advised Fund of the Community Foundation of Rochester (RACF).  The Friends have until December 31, 2008 to raise $12,000 in contributions from individuals, which will be matched on a dollar-for-dollar basis.  All grant money and donations raised in response to this “Double Your Dollars” challenge will be added to the Friends Endowment for the Macedon Public Library - Fund A, managed by RACF.  This community foundation helps people and organizations in a six-county region achieve their philanthropic, estate, financial planning, and tax goals through the establishment of endowment funds, donor advised funds, and other vehicles that build a better community.

Please see the return envelope enclosed in the 2008 Spring/Summer of the Macedon Messenger.  The self-addressed envelope can be used to make your donation to the Friends Endowment for the Macedon Public Library.  All donations are tax-deductible. If you would like to obtain more information about the endowment or the Friends, please leave your contact information at the Main Desk at the Library, or call (315) 986-5932, ext. 3.

Distribution of Endowment Income

Do you have a proposal for a program or project to benefit the Library?

If you have an idea for a program or project to benefit the library and its patrons, please consider submitting a proposal.  Endowment Proposal forms will be available at the library (Main Desk) after May 1, 2008. (Or after May 1, you may download the form in PDF format from the library’s website at <www.macedon.pls-net.org>, click on Friends Endowment for the Macedon Public Library.)  This summer, the Endowment’s Board of Directors will be deciding on proposals to be funded from the endowment’s grant-making account. If you have a question concerning an endowment suggestion or proposal, please leave a message for Bill Moore at the library (315) 986-5932, ext. 3.  Thank you.

Income from the Endowment will not be used for operational or capital improvement expenses, nor will it replace the supportive funds now received from municipal entities such as the Town of Macedon. We envision that the Friends Endowment will eventually provide a predictable source of long-term funding for those outreach services, programs, and special needs which the Macedon Public Library cannot hope to fund out of its limited annual operating budget, and for which taxpayer dollars may never be available.  These might include funding:

Such outreach services, programs, and special needs projects can benefit the library and its staff, the many young readers, students, and patrons of all ages who come seeking cultural enrichment, entertainment, and/or practical information, and through a ripple effect, many of the residents of the Village and Town of Macedon.

Endowment Board of Trustees

The Friends’ amended Constitution has established an Endowment Board of Trustees to oversee the distribution of the endowment’s returns. This board will consist of the president of the Friends of the MPL, the chair of the Friends Endowment fundraising sub-committee (CRMPL), a liaison from the Library Board of Trustees, the Library Director, and up to five members of the community.  Those wishing to serve on this board may submit a brief letter of application, outlining their reasons for wanting to serve.  The letter may be addressed to the Friends of the MPL, c/o Macedon Public Library, 30 Main Street, Macedon, NY  14502.

Current members of the Endowment Board of Trustees (January 2008) areBill Moore, Mert Bartels, Darlene Virkler, Alice Kenyon, Rosalie Gabbert, Katie Read, Scarlett Miles, and Joanne Rothfuss.

Friends Endowment for the Macedon Public Library Established

Plan ahead.

The Friends of the Macedon Public Library are heeding that practical advice, as illustrated by a familiar fable.  In the oft-told tale of the Ant and the Grasshopper, the wiser ant puts by part of his food supply for the future, while the contented grasshopper is concerned only with present needs.  Sure enough, eventually the grasshopper comes to grief, while the industrious ant is able to sustain himself from his collected stores.  The Friends have now taken the first step toward imitating that forward-looking ant.

In November 2004, the Friends amended their Constitution and Bylaws to provide for the establishment of the Friends Endowment for the Macedon Public Library.   It is hoped that the endowment, which will be managed by  Rochester Area Community Foundation (RACF), will eventually provide long-term, stable and predictable funding for those outreach services, programs, and special needs which the library cannot hope to fund out of its limited annual operating budget.  Such programs and special needs can benefit the operation of the library and its staff, the many young readers, students, and patrons of all ages who come seeking cultural enrichment, entertainment, and/or practical information, and through a ripple effect, many of the residents of the Village and Town of Macedon.

Why an endowment?  Because the Friends is a private, charitable organization, not governed by a municipal entity’s legally-mandated investment restrictions, it can establish an endowment. The principle advantage of the endowment is that the funds in the endowment can be invested to much better advantage than funds held by municipal institutions such as the library. But the conditions on the endowment ensure all funds placed into the endowment will be used to support the library and its programs. With the assistance of RACF, the endowment will have the benefit of expanded investment opportunities and professional financial management.  The Friends Endowment should be able to realize a greater return on investment, thus maximizing the impact of your support to the library.  Fundraising activities for the endowment will be conducted by CRMPL, the endowment fundraising sub-committee of the Friends.

On-going contributions from the community, combined with professional oversight by the Community Foundation, will help the Friends Endowment continue to grow to become a significant source of support for library programs and services.

By supporting the Friends Endowment for the Macedon Public Library, donors will have a chance to leverage their support for the library.  All of the money donated to the endowment will be used to generate funds for the long-term support of library programs and services.  All of the money donated to the endowment will be used to support the library.  Endowment income will not be used for operational or capital improvement expenses, nor will it be used to replace or substitute for the tax support received from municipal entities such as the Town of Macedon.

Since 1972, when the Friends was founded, its members have worked hard to help establish the place of the library in the Macedon community.  For over 30 years, the goal of the Friends and its volunteers has been to assist the library in realizing its potential to become a needs-responsive and user-friendly facility, a hub of community activity.  The work has been its own reward, although other rewards have also come our way.  Each year at the New York Library Association Conference and Trade Show, the NYLA Empire Friends of New York State Roundtable (EFR) honors a library volunteer or a group of volunteers who have significantly contributed to the growth of a library or a Friends organization.  In October 2004, NYLA presented the Daniel W. Casey Library Advocacy Award to the Friends of the Macedon Public Library, CRMPL, and the Bullis Books Committee.  This recognition of our work was very gratifying, and has spurred us on to new challenges.   The new endowment is our latest major effort.

CRMPL - (Committee to Rebuild the Macedon Public Library)

CRMPL is a sub-committee of the Friends of the Macedon Public Library, formed in June 2002 after the successful referendum concerning the funding for the construction of the new Town Hall and Library. CRMPL's initial mission was to raise matching funds to secure the $100,000 challenge grant offered to the MPL by the Bullis Advised Fund of Rochester Area Community Foundation. After that goal was realized, CRMPL eventually turned its fundraising focus toward the establishment of the Friends Endowment for the Macedon Public Library.
