Minutes - February 21, 2008

Present: Carol Deys, Pam Dibble, Joan Handfield, Abbe Harbol, Denie Johnston, Carol Klingler, Sharon Lockemeyer, Scarlett Miles, Joan Moore, Marile Waterstraat, and Karen Yatteau.

The meeting was called to order by Joan Hanfield at 1:05 p.m. in the library’s Community Room.

Secretary’s report:  The minutes of  January 17, 2008 were approved as written.

Treasurer’s Report:

*Includes $1,920 in funds to be spent on two Endowment grants.

Announcements and updates:

Display cases:  During February, Pam Dibble’s Winter/Snowman display filled in at the last minute for St. Michael’s School (Newark); Elephants from the O’Mara Family will be on display in March; Dolphins from Joan Handfield in April; and “The Way It Was” from Historian Helen Burgio in May.  Joan Moore also called attention to the beautiful exhibit on books concerned with Arctic exploration in the Bullis Collection display case put together by Carol Klingler and Helen Pentoney.

Book sales:

Per Joan H., book donations have been slow since our last sale.  We have decided to hold a Book Donation Day on Saturday, April 12 in the Community Room at the library from 10 a.m. to 2:00 p.m.  Volunteers will be needed to sort the books in preparation for the sale. Joan Moore will reserve the room and put advertising in the Macedon Messenger and the local newspapers.

History Committee:  (Rosalie Gabbert and Helen Pentoney) - No report this month. Please put any Library/Friends’ news items, photos, clippings into Rosalie’s mailbox in the Library workroom.

CRMPL update:

Joan Moore reported that CRMPL will not get the official word on its application for a Bullis Advised Fund matching grant for 2008 in the amount of $12,000 until March 6; however indications are that the application will be approved.  Fingers are still crossed!

Joan also reported that the “Soup and Salad Thank You Party” held at Parkwood Heights on Saturday, February 9 was a great success.  Close to 60 endowment donors, and library volunteers and staff attended and enjoyed the delicious soup and salad and a wonderful performance by the Pal-Mac High School Select Choir. Each attendee received a coupon inviting them to a preview of the Book Sale and offering them one free book.  Coupons for those not in attendance were delivered in person or mailed out.

The kick-off for the 2008 “Double Your Dollars” campaign (if our grant application is successful) will begin with a reply envelope inserted into the Spring 2008 issue of the Macedon Messenger. The direct mailing portion of the campaign will take place in late June or early July.

The two projects being funded by the grant-making account from the Friends Endowment are proceeding well. Christopher Blomgren presented the first in his series of History Alive! programs on February 15 at Macedon Elementary School.  His next presentation will be on Saturday, March 29, from 1-2 p.m. at the library.  The Graphic Novel Center is established and growing. We are going to contact Ed Fortuna for suggestions about some graphic novel art (Manga style) to draw attention to the Center.  Endowment funds are available for such an enhancement.

Outreach:  No report this month

Programming Grades 5-8:  Scarlett Miles asked permission to represent the Friends at a training session for the NYS Summer Reading Program to be held at the Pioneer Library System headquarters in Canandaigua in March. We look forward to Scarlett bringing back some good ideas for the library.

On-going activities: (all are welcome to attend)

Craft Get-together:  Every Wednesday at the library from 10:00 a.m. to Noon

Writer’s Group:  First Tuesday of the month at the library at 1:00 p.m.

Mah-Jong Players:  Check with Karen Yatteau about time and place

Old Business:

“Thank You” note from PLS:  We received a “Thank You” note for the $50 we donated to help defray costs for the annual PLS bus trip to Albany to lobby the legislature on behalf of libraries.

Bookshelf Quilt: Carol Klingler has finished the last details on the quilt - and it is beautiful!  Carol passed around a muslin square for those who had worked on the quilt to sign. The square will be sewn onto the back of the quilt.  We hope to find a place in the library to hang the quilt if the Library Board gives us permission.

Election of officers:  Karen Yatteau and Sharon Lockemeyer will form a nominating committee to assemble a slate of officers for election in June.

Sample Friends brochure:  Joan Handfield shared a brochure from the Friends of the Melbourne (Florida) Library which she noticed on a recent vacation trip.

Bullis Room interviews:  Rosalie Gabbert recently interviewed Peggy Eskild, who knew Nettie Bullis and the Bullis House well.  According to Carol Klingler, the interview is fascinating.  The Bullis Committee is now in the process of establishing a way to transcribe the CD recording.

Oral History: Carol Klingler also presented information about a National Public Radio project called “StoryCorps”, a collection of mini-oral histories being recorded all over the country.  Carol suggested that an oral history project along the lines of StoryCorps would be a great Friends project.  Joan Moore suggested that it might be perfect for a proposal for the Friends Endowment.

New Business:

The meeting was adjourned at 1:50 p.m.  The next meeting will be held on Thursday, March 20, at 1:00 p.m., in the Community Room at the library.   After the meeting, we commenced work on the Storytime book bags for our two-year-old patrons.

Minutes respectfully submitted by:

 Joan Moore
