Announcements and updates:
Display cases: Pam Dibble’s mother’s Teapot collection is currently on display; St. Michael’s School (Newark) in February; Elephants from the O’Mara Family in March; Dolphins from Joan Handfield in April; and “The Way It Was” from Historian Helen Burgio in May. Joan M. also called attention to the splendid exhibit in the Bullis Collection display case put together by Carol Klingler and Helen Pentoney. Their next exhibit will be on Bullis books concerned with Arctic exploration.
Book sales:
- Ebay - no current sales
- Rundel - $20 received in December for November sales
- On-going sale - $92 earned in December (per Joan Handfield) (all $ goes to library revenue)
- Next Used Book Sale - April 24-26, with a Preview sale on April 23 from 6:30-8 p.m. for Endowment donors, library volunteers, and staff (the Community Room has been reserved from April 22 through April 27). Per Joan H., book donations have been slow since our October sale; we may need to schedule (and advertise) several Saturdays as book donation days; April 5 and 12 were suggested as Book Donation Saturdays when we could receive and sort books in the Community Room.
History Committee: (Rosalie Gabbert and Helen Pentoney)
Rosalie reported that the 2007 history/clipping book has been completed. Nothing submitted yet for 2008. She mentioned her archives of library photos dating back several decades, and asked for suggestions as to how they might be used. Please put any Library/Friends’ news items, photos, clippings into Rosalie’s mailbox in the Library workroom.
CRMPL update: Joan M. reported that CRMPL has applied for a Bullis Advised Fund matching grant in the amount of $12,000 for 2008, and should be notified about a decision around the beginning of February. The “Double Your Dollars” campaign reached its $12,000 goal for 2007. CRMPL is now planning its “Thank You” Soup and Salad party to be held at Parkwood Heights on February 9, from 1:30 to 3:15 p.m. Members of the Pal-Mac Select Choir will perform around 2:15 p.m. Invitations have been mailed out.
Bill Moore spoke about a planned CRMPL “Legacy” brochure about the possibility of people designating the Friends Endowment as a beneficiary in their wills. CRMPL needs people to volunteer to have their photos taken to be used in the brochure.
Outreach: no report this month; Karen Yatteau asked if the Friends would be willing to purchase a Mah Jong set for the library (Karen facilitates a weekly Mah Jong class). Members decided that if interest in the class continues, we would put a request in the spring issue of the Macedon Messenger asking if anyone would be willing to donate a set to the library.
Programming Grades 5-8: no report this month; Marile W. will get more information on an art program for this age group about drawing super heroes.
Old Business:
Book bags for Storytime: Marile W. purchased 24 bags for our two-year-old Storytime participants. We will begin to decorate these bags at our February meeting. Carol K. will purchase the bonding material and the fabric paint. Marile will check with Pam Dibble to make sure we have enough fabric. Joan M. will bring an iron.
Craft Get-together: Joan M. reported on the craft activity, organized by Linda Kingsley, which is being held on Wednesday mornings (10 a.m. to Noon) at the library. Currently the group is knitting winter hats; a variety of different craft activities is planned. Come and go as you please. Great fun!
New Business:
- Members present signed a card for Abbe Harbol to express the Friends’ sympathy for the recent passing of her husband.
- Joan M. presented a request from the Pioneer Library System for funding for their annual bus trip to Albany. Members agreed to send $50 to PLS to help subsidize this activity.
- Members discussed the need for additional signage for the Adult Literacy Center and the Graphic Novel Center in the library (located to the left of the two study rooms in the Young Adult section). The Library board of Trustees would have to OK any suggestions for signage, but the Friends could donate the funds (signage for the Graphic Novel Center could be paid for with already available Endowment grant funds). Suggestions included signage by Sue Yara, an appropriate mural, or graphic art by high school students. Members are asked to bring ideas for signage to the February meeting.
- Carol K. invited members to a Book Repair Workshop sponsored by the Bullis Committee to be held on Saturday, January 26, beginning at 10 a.m. in the Community Room at the library. Water- damaged books (of lesser value) from the Bullis Collection will be repaired. All are welcome to come and learn how to repair covers and bindings.
- Election of officers - tabled for the February meeting
“Thank You” gift cards: Members worked on the gift cards for Endowment donors, library volunteers, and staff. These gift cards (to be distributed at the “Thank You” party), are invitations to the Used Book Sale Preview night in April, along with the offer of one free book from the sale.
Bookcase Quilt hanging: Carol K. has been working on the quilt at home, and she brought the work-in-progress with her to the meeting. The quilt is beautiful! Work still needs to be done on the binding. Carol has begun to machine “stitch in the ditch”, but we need to make a decision about some hand-quilting which will have to be done on the border. We also plan to put a muslin patch on the back of the quilt listing the date of completion and the names of those who worked on it.
The meeting was adjourned at 2:16 p.m. The next meeting will be held on Thursday, February 21, 2008 in the Community Room at the library. We will be working on Storytime bags.
Minutes respectfully submitted by: Nancy Wint and Joan Moore
