CRMPL Report
On Saturday, July 7, the CRMPL committee and other members of the Friends got together to prepare and mail 300 appeal letters for the 2007 “Double Your Dollars” endowment fundraising campaign. Following the appeal envelope which was inserted into the Spring issue of the Macedon Messenger, this mailing campaign is the major fundraising activity for the Friends Endowment for the Macedon Public Library. The letter included a return, stamped, and self-addressed envelope, and a request for proposals for distribution of the annual return on our endowment investment. (This year, we have $2,170.77 to distribute for library programs, projects, etc.)
The Endowment Board of Directors is seeking applications for proposals to distribute the $2,170.77 in endowment grants. Applications are available at the library; the deadline is August 15 at 5:00 p.m.
Display Cases
Pam Dibble confirmed that two children have volunteered to display their collections in the display case, and the runner-up prizes for the Harry Potter drawing have been on display.
Book Sales
- The on-going used book sale at the library earned $52 in June 2007.
- The Rundel Library on-line book sale service has been sending us checks every month for varying amounts between $5 - $15. Joan and Bill Moore will be taking some more books to Rundel and picking up books which have been there for some time.
- No eBay sales to report.
- The Fall Used Book Sale is scheduled for October 18-20. Set-up will begin on Tuesday, October 16. The Interact Club at Pal-Mac High School has listed the sale on their calendar, so we may have some student help for the set-up.
History Committee
No report this month. Newspaper stories and other items of interest about the library may be submitted to Rosalie Gabbert.Outreach
Joan H. reported that the residents at Parkwood Heights are very interested in having access to more Books-on-Tape. The Friends could purchase more audio books, plus popular large print books and CDs of “time-tested music” for the library, or purchase of this material could become a proposal for a Friends Endowment grant application. Further discussion was tabled until the August meeting.
Programming for grades 5-8
Summer programming at the library includes a series of Graphic Novel classes targeting this audience.
Carol Klingler also reported on a recent Geo-caching class taught by her husband Phil at the library and Bullis Park. She said the class went well, but recommended that such classes which take children to sites away from the library really need at least two adults supervisors.
Old Business:
The Harry Potter book drawing (“Harry Potter and the Deathly Hallows”) will be held on Saturday, July 21 at the library. Marile and Abby will officiate and notify the winners. The order for the runner-up prizes will be:
Second prize - tapestry pillow
Third prize - set of four book marks in a case
Remaining prizes are three more Harry Potter themed book marks; fourth prize winner gets first pick, etc.
Joan H. reported on her phone call to Bruce Benton regarding a Kiwanis program promoting safety in schools. Mr. Benton had approached the Friends about participating in the program. After learning more details, the Friends decided it was not the type of project which lent itself to Friends involvement.
New Business:
Joan H. reported on a project to send a box of good used books to service men and women serving overseas. The cost to mail 20-25 books per box is $20. We voted to give Joan $20 from the proceeds of the yard sale to mail one box of appropriate books from our on-going used book sale.
We need to purchase more of the boxes we use to store books for the semi-annual used book sales (and which we have used over and over again since 2001). The cost would be approximately $120 for 48 sturdy, bankers’ boxes, and they could be ordered through the library. A proposal for the expenditure will be made at the August meeting.
We received a “Thank You” note from Virginia from the Annandale High School Band Boosters for the donation we made to the Mary Read Scholarship Fund.
The membership gathered to review the progress on the quilt project and to position the twelve finished quilt squares into a potential wall hanging. We arrived at a mutually agreeable assemblage, and discussed the material we would need for the “bookshelf” part of the quilt which would unite all of the squares. It was decided that a “wood grain” pattern would be best; however, it was not determined who would purchase the material. We may have to make all of the arrangements at the next meeting for a “quilting bee” to cut, sew, and quilt the wall hanging.
The meeting was adjourned at 2:00 p.m.
Next meeting
Our next meeting will be held on Thursday, August 16, in the Community Room at the Library.
Reminder: Due to the used book sale in October, the Friends meeting will be moved to the fourth Thursday of the month - October 25th, 2007.
Minutes respectfully submitted by:
Joan Moore for Abigail Harbol, Secretary for FMPL
